The Washington Bordeaux Blend Critics Pour at Home

The Bordeaux Blend Critics Pour at Home

DeLille Cellars’ vibrant, lush “D2” cuvée is an industry insider favorite—a silky-textured red you’ll find on the kitchen tables of critics and sommeliers. The winery Robert Parker has called “the Lafite-Rothschild of Washington State” regularly earns praise for delivering rich Bordeaux elegance like this at a $40 price point.

The 2015 is “impressively concentrated” according to Vinous, “offering a fine-grained texture and noteworthy inner-mouth floral lift.” Jeb Dunnuck likewise praised it as “Pomerol-like” and “seamless and elegant.”

On the morning of his wedding day, Delille executive winemaker Chris Upchurch spontaneously whipped up a Syrah-Cabernet blend to serve at the reception. It was a decision that left him with wine-stained hands at his nuptials. It’s also one that highlights the obsessive passion that has defined his storied career—the man didn’t even take his wedding day off! In D2, Upchurch’s passion for blending is taste-able: Bursting with blackberry, plum, and black cherry fruit tinged with aromas of smoke, baking spice, and fresh herbs, this blend is far more than the sum of its parts.

Named after the Médoc’s wine route, D2’s blend of Bordeaux varieties finds star winemaker Upchurch funneling grapes from some of Columbia Valley’s most prestigious vineyards including like Grand Ciel, Klipsun, and Ciel du Cheval, into a rich expression of Washington terroir.

The state’s wine country lies on approximately the same latitude as Bordeaux, receives little rainfall, and sees more sunshine than Napa. As a result, DeLille’s grapes coalesce to deliver pinpoint balance and refined, complex elegance—an outstanding representation of the Bordeaux style and Washington wine at its apex.
