2015 Château Turcaud Entre-Deux-Mers: “More Graves than Entre-Deux-Mers”

In five consecutive vintages, it’s been the top-rated white wine bargain on WineAccess. But for climatic reasons explained to us in detail last month in Bordeaux, the 2015 vintage is one of the two or three richest Entre-Deux-Mers in the history of Château Turcaud.

Even before the harvest of 2015, the French press was priming the pump, suggesting that 2015 was poised to outpoint 2005, 2009, and 2010. At Château Turcaud, in terms of natural concentration and ripe citrus exoticism, for once all the hype turned out to be true.

Stéphane Le May, Maurice Robert’s son-in-law, explained: “We got off to a very fast start, with a very wet January and February making for a high water table. But in March, everything shifted. Typically March is a rainy month, but in 2015 there was next to none. Between March 1st and June 30th, we had less than one-half the rainfall than is typical for Bordeaux.”

Flowering took place early and without a hitch, making for a copious fruit set. July then turned hot, torridly so, not unlike 2009. During our Bordeaux trip in mid-July, we recall being dripping wet while traipsing the rows of Sémillon at Château Turcaud. Temperatures topped 100 degrees in the sun, day after day. Stéphane told us that while his octogenarian father-in-law remembered a vintage or two that were as hot as 2015, Stéphane recalled none.

While the intense heat pushed the envelope on maturity, by early August the risk of hydric stress had become alarming. Had the rain not begun to fall in August, Château Turcaud’s 2015 storyline would have followed a far different script. But thanks to those well-timed showers, the vines quickly quenched their thirst, paving the way for one of the most critically acclaimed harvests in Bordeaux history.

The 2015 Château Turcaud Entre-Deux-Mers is BRILLIANT straw-green. Fabulously floral and plush aromatically, featuring a mouthwatering mix of ripe apple, pear, lemon, and anise. Extraordinarily rich, more like a rich Graves than Entre-Deux-Mers, dense and weighty, filled with ripe lemon, pear, and a hint of pina colada coconut. Despite all the opulence of the vintage, finishing with bracing acidity and tension. Drink now-2021.
