One of The Greatest Tuscan Bargains of the Triumphant 2015 Vintage
Our Castello di Bossi offers have a history of selling out quickly, so we’ll keep this to the point. Today we have the best price in the nation on Castello di Bossi’s regal, lavishly textured 97-point 2015 Gran Selezione—a shot at true Sangiovese nobility.
That’s just $35 on bottles for this historic estate’s top-tier release, called “fabulous” by James Suckling, with “super fine tannins that melt into the wine.” Displaying incredible power and intensity on the palate with effortless elegance and polish, the Gran Selezione is “agile and floating across the palate.”
Both Ornellaia and Sassicaia scored just one point higher—and cost $229 and $269, respectively. With our special deal making this bottle available for under-$40, one of the greatest Tuscan bargains of the triumphant 2015 vintage is in your hands.
In the past we’ve sold single-vineyard designates from this iconic estate—whose history dates back to the 9th century—but today is the first time we’ve landed access to this elite cuvée, which blends only the best estate fruit of the vintage.
The rich concentration of the southerly Castelnuovo Berardenga subzone, in combination with a season described by some Italian enologists as the greatest vintage of their careers, supplied this 2015 with the makings of legend. Nuanced black currant, black cherry and spiced plum tones anchor the fruit, defined by the gentle grip of tannins that add a beautiful reference point to the framework. There’s not a single rough edge here.
“In my estimation, Marco Bacci’s Castello di Bossi delivers one of the absolute best expressions of Chianti Classico from the Castelnuovo Berardenga,” says Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. The Baccis acquired the 14th century estate in 1980 and hired superstar enologist Alberto Antonini, a champion of energy, vitality, and purity who favors a non-interventionist approach.
Thanks to his efforts and the Bacci vision, Castello di Bossi has been able to produce critically acclaimed hits like this Gran Selezione, which shows a harmony and sophistication that typically requires a decade to achieve. During a hot growing season, when warmth pressed down deeply into the rolling green hills of the 1,260-acre estate, Bossi benefited from its high-altitude vineyards, preserving freshness and finesse. Soils are richer here than elsewhere in the region, a mix of calcareous sands, broken stones, and tuffs that fill grapes with weighty power and verve.
After fermentation in stainless steel, this best-of-the-best selection spent two years in 500L French barrels, lending a kiss of modern polish and integration, followed by another six months in barrel. As Suckling recognized, it already has the stature of a wine five years older and five times the price. At just $35, it belongs in your cellar.
