“All You Need in a Model Brunello”

Ever since we discovered the outstanding Caparzo Brunello on a buying trip to Tuscany in 2011, it’s become one of the most beloved and sought-after offerings on Wine Access—and with 95 points for just $40, this bottle reaches a whole new level of value.

Never before has there been a year quite like 2015 in Montalcino, and in what James Suckling called a “fairy-tale vintage,” Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini produced one of Caparzo’s best wines ever. Suckling awarded it 95 points, and hailed its “intensity and focus,” and “long and flavorful finish.” Not to be left out of the conversation, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate called it “all you need in a model Brunello,” and said “(They) always admire the wines of Caparzo for their accessible and immediate drinking style.”

This is a Wine Access favorite, year in and year out. And this 95-pointer is poised to make a ton of new fans, bottle by bargain bottle.

Although it will age for decades, there is no need to wait to pop a cork on this one. Intense aromas of red cherry, strawberry, and plum burst from the glass, accented by savory layers of spice, fresh mushroom, cedar, and freshly tilled earth. The texture is already silken, with fine-grained, powdery tannins providing a perfect backbone for the ripe core of mouthwatering fruit.

All of this exquisite brilliance began in the vineyard. “Fruit has never been more beautiful than it was in the picture-perfect 2015 vintage,” wrote Wine Advocate, which awarded a 97-point score to the 2015 Brunello vintage. Before the growing season began, winter rains filled up water tables deep underground in Montalcino, providing reserves for the months that followed. Across the region, veraison began two weeks early, allowing Sangiovese extra time to ripen. And although the summer was hot and dry, dramatic diurnal temperature shifts and perfectly timed showers cooled the grapes when they needed it most, imbuing them with vibrant acidity.

At Caparzo, the vineyard’s heavy clay-based soils added an extra dimension of richness and concentration to the perfectly ripened Sangiovese. After two years aging in large Slavonian oak barrels followed by another two in bottle, the 2015 is primed and poised to deliver sheer amazement right now, and well into the future. With today’s discount of 20%, there’s no better time to stock up.
