Last year, we introduced Wine Access members to Bonacchi—a dazzling, under-the-radar Brunello producer that had long escaped the gaze of the wine-media radar. Our offer ended the wine’s secret status, but we’re back with another allocation of this spectacular bottle, which brings Brunello’s signature complexity and power at an outstanding price.

Its 93-point scores puts Bonacchi Molino del Piano in the company of $115+ bottles from Le Ragnaie, Podere Giodo, and Tenute Silvio Nardi, but its price tag is WAY lower.

This Brunello’s exceptional quality is thanks in large part to young winemaker Ivan Misuri, a winner of the career-making Giulio Gambelli Prize. Named for Italy’s greatest master of Sangiovese, it’s one of the most prestigious honors a vintner can win in the cradle of Brunello.

Even though it’s going on its fourth generation of leadership, Cantine Bonacchi is a fledgling estate for Montalcino, where it has become a must-know for Brunello lovers in recent years. A remarkable bottling from Bonacchi’s most prized vineyards in Montalcino, it has a concentration and focus due to its hillside terroir and the spectacular 2015 vintage.

Andrea Bonacchi has retained the best of what his great-grandfather started, but also thoroughly modernized the entire operation. With Misuri at the helm, Bonacchi has refocused winemaking efforts on temperature controlled, stainless-steel fermentation to deliver brighter fruit flavors, and aging in oak barriques and tonneaux to round the tannins and emphasize overall balance.

The result is a Brunello that rewards earlier drinking than Andrea’s bisnonno would have ever dreamed possible. An absolutely tremendous find from a rising superstar, this $30 steal is the 2015 Brunello to claim right now.
