Dominios de Berceo was named after the medieval poet Gonzalo de Berceo. Their estate vineyards, predominantly planted with Tempranillo, are situated in an area characterized by chalky-clay soils and influenced by the Sierra de la Demanda mountains' microclimate.
That said, the Perfiloxerico Rioja comes from a one-of-a-kind place. A small vineyard called Prefiloxerico, located in Bano de Ebro, a little village at the bend of the Ebro River. winery operates within the Rioja Alta sub-region, known for producing some of the area's most structured wines.
The winery specializes in Reserva and Gran Reserva wines, aging them in both French and American oak barrels in their underground cellars. Their production is intentionally limited, with aging taking place in temperature and humidity-controlled conditions below ground. The winemaking team employs both traditional Rioja methods and modern techniques, resulting in wines that typically show both regional character and aging potential.
The grapes were harvested into 12kg boxes only by selected staff—no seasonal workers get the call for this special assignment. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks, with daily pumpovers, before spending a year in French oak.
Now a decade on, the wine is showing beautiful aged character with a remarkable level of liveliness. For such a delicious wine and high performer, it’s a downright bargain at our price. Don’t miss it.
