    Opulent in the Extreme

Nine months of winter. Three months of hell.

That’s Ribera del Duero, the hot, dry region known as Spain’s Napa Valley, where extreme conditions push the Tinta del Pais grape to decadent plushness. The region’s top wines—names like Pingus and Vega Sicilia—are some of the most expensive in the entire country, commanding three- and four-figure prices.

That’s why we jump all over spectacular Ribera values like the 2015 Senorio de Sotillo Ribera del Duero. Grown on 60–90-year-old vines in an outstanding vintage that supercharged the wines, carefully selected from the estate’s best fruit, this is the full Ribera experience, without the massive price.

Spain’s star Tempranillo grape reaches its apex of richness and power in Ribera del Duero, the remote, high-altitude haven tucked away in the dry, rugged hills north of Madrid. Ripened to perfection in the unrelenting sun and displaying the impressive concentration of fruit from some of the country’s oldest vines, inky Ribera blockbusters like the 2015 Senorio de Sotillo Reserva challenge Rioja for Spanish supremacy, offering a hedonistic take on the grape.

The Arroyo family started bottling wine in Ribera in 1979, though the winemaking tradition in the family goes back centuries. Winery founder Ismael Arroyo is a pioneer in the region, and he was instrumental in establishing the Ribera del Duero DO back in 1982. Now, they farm 25 hectares spread over 12 plots in the region, hand-picking, avoiding chemicals, and fermenting on native yeasts.

After 24 months in French and American oak and another five years in bottle, this is jam-packed with rich Ribera fruit and complexity, and it’s drinking spectacularly right now. Pop some by the grill or cellar for a few more years.
