    Top Sommelier Favorite Everyday Red

    Top Sommelier Favorite Everyday Red

2015 Beaujolais is a game changer. The wines are impressively dark, vibrant, unctuous and pleasurable. If you haven't tried any, the 2015 Anne-Sophie Dubois, Fleurie "L’Alchimiste" is a must. Anne-Sophie Dubois is a rockstar winemaker of the region. If you don’t believe us, consider what The Wine Advocate has said: “She just has the right approach to winemaking – adhering to traditional methods of vinification and allowing her Fleurie to ‘sing,’” and raved that her wines are “absolutely delicious.”

Ask any top sommelier what their favorite everyday red is, and most will tell you it’s Cru Beaujolais — for good reason. If you’re not drinking it, you're missing out on one of the most exciting wine values on the planet.

One of the 10 Crus that make up the Beaujolais region, Fleurie is known for its highly granitic soils, which give way to dark-berried fruit, balanced by minerality, floral and classic black tea notes. Dubois’ southwest-facing vineyards are perched on rich granite slopes, planted to vines 40-years of age and older. We weren’t surprised to learn that Dubois had trained in Volnay before making her way to Beaujolais as her wines deliver a Burgundy-like lushness.

Taking cues from the legendary French vigneron Henri Jayer, Anne-Sophie employs organic farming methods, native yeasts and hand-harvesting — all in hopes of showcasing the true terroir of Fleurie. The “L’Alchimiste” is aged 15 months in a combination of cement vats and large, neutral barrels. The wine is then bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Her meticulous guidance produces a complex, nuanced selection that honors Beaujolais tradition even as it forges its own path.
