Gambero Rosso’s Winery of the Year Scores Again
Gambero Rosso’s Winery of the Year Scores Again
Named the Gambero Rosso Winery of the Year in 2014, the Tuscan superstar Castello ColleMassari is primed for a repeat performance of their terrific 2013 Montecucco Rosso Riserva, which hauled in higher Vinous scores than its pricier Tuscan neighbors. After tasting the Tre Bicchieri-awarded 2014 Montecucco Rosso Riserva at Wine Access HQ we were impressed — naturally so. Winemaker Luca Marrone hails from Poggio di Sotto (an estate touted as “making the most brilliant wines in Montalcino” by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) and the 2014 captures his brilliance — primarily Sangiovese blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. those who depleted our allocation of the 2013s have already hit the “Buy” button.
Ever since Claudio Tipa (of Tuscan Bolgheri Grattamacco fame) launched the 3,000-acre winery from Mt. Amiata’s foothills in 1998, they’ve been all about making beautiful, terroir-driven wines that consistently upstage their Tuscan neighbors — especially on price. The 2014 Montecucco Rosso Riserva proves their strategy hasn’t changed.
As at the other Tipa properties, Claudio uses organic farming techniques on ColleMassari’s 275 acres of elevated, sloping clay soils, which yields an elegantly structured wine packed with bright acidity and nuanced earth.
Wine Access clients snatched up every bottle of our 2013 allocation. With only 85 cases of the 2014 available, this is sure to fly.
