100-Point Winemaker and a Napa Grand Cru Vineyard
100-Point Winemaker and a Napa Grand Cru Vineyard
As a valued collector of Joseph Phelps Insignia, we are delighted to offer you a rare allocation of the incredible 2014 Kata Beckstoffer Bourn Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon — an incredible collector-worthy Napa Cabernet.
When Antonio Galloni first tasted Kata, he called it “one of the most distinctive new releases I have tasted in Napa Valley.” It’s a tale of two perfect marriages: a 100-point winemaker and a Grand Cru Napa vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon and old-vine Petite Sirah. Proprietor David Beckstoffer’s father Andy is Napa’s greatest grower; David is President of Beckstoffer Vineyards, part of Andy’s Heritage Vineyards of Napa. The vineyards under David’s care are household names, like To Kalon, Las Piedras, and Dr. Crane. With winemaker Benoit Touquette, one of Napa’s fastest-rising stars and a Parker 100-point favorite, Beckstoffer has created one of the most exciting wines we’ve tasted in years — 2014 Kata — from Cabernet Sauvignon off the Beckstoffer Bourn Vineyard.
You’ll find those words, “Beckstoffer Vineyard,” on an incredible 14x 100-point Robert Parker wines from prestigious names like Schrader, Purlieu, Paul Hobbs, Realm, and Carter. For decades, the Beckstoffers exclusively sold grapes off some of the most sought-after vineyards in the Valley to a lucky few. With the 2010 acquisition of the Bourn Vineyard in St. Helena, David Beckstoffer knew if he was ever make wine from one of the family’s vineyards, this was the site. The 12-acre St. Helena vineyard is a stone’s throw from Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard and Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard. First planted in 1872, it is one of the oldest vineyards in Napa Valley, with 60-year-old Petite Sirah growing alongside Cabernet Sauvignon in well-drained gravel soils. David just needed an exceptional winemaker to work with this unmatched site.
Enter Benoit Touquette, a Bordeaux native who was mentored by world-renowned consultant Michel Rolland. In Napa, Benoit had honed his craft under Screaming Eagle winemaker Andy Erickson before forging his own path. When the two met, Benoit was a rising star, but not yet of such status that David feared being lost in an endless portfolio of consulting projects as might happen with more established superstar winemakers.
Their collaboration impressed Antonio Galloni: “I knew it the moment I tasted it. The wine in my glass was one of the most exciting new projects in Napa Valley.” In the years that followed, Benoit’s name was on everyone’s lips, as he collected six perfect 100-point scores from Robert Parker in only six years.
