One of Calistoga’s Greatest Hillside Terroirs
When Wine Spectator summed up Napa Valley’s 2014 harvest, they called it “a dream vintage.”
The bad news: It was a short crop, with not a lot of wine to go around.
That’s why we NEVER expected to get access to a library release like this.
Sourced from the winery’s TINY stock, shaped by world-class enologist Michel Rolland—who also had a hand in Bryant Family, Harlan, and Dalla Valle that year—the 2014 Jericho Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon comes from hillside vines just up the road from Eisele Vineyard. Over the years, this site has contributed grapes to wines from Chateau Montelena, Rudd Estate, and David Ramey.
Dale and Marla Bleecher purchased this 135-acre property in 1989, gradually developing vineyards and raising a family there. Their son Nick, who trained at UC Davis and apprenticed with no less than Heidi Barrett, Bo Barrett, Thomas Rivers Brown, and Aaron Pott, is now the GM and head winemaker—and he knows his terroir as only someone who grew up among the rows can.
Here in this corner of the Valley, diurnal temperature swings are huge—sometimes as great as 50 degrees. This hastens ripening during the day, and the cool nights help the grapes keep acidity and freshness. It’s simply a perfect microclimate for Cabernet Sauvignon.
David Ramey loved Jericho Canyon fruit so much that he insisted on a vineyard-designate with Rudd, and even continued making a vineyard-designate under his Ramey label up through 2005.
Eight years have been extremely kind to this deep-ruby-colored Cabernet, and it’s just soaring toward its plateau of maturity. Drink a bottle with a thick ribeye and then enjoy the other five over the next few years.
