Vibrancy and Depth from Alsace’s Storybook Slopes
Few names are as closely associated with Alsace as Trimbach, whose 2013 Pinot Gris Réserve is a shimmeringly clear expression of what makes the region so important. It’s a triple 91-point beauty that vibrates with fruit energy and cellar-earned complexity.
Clinging to steep hillsides and rolling along the gentler slopes of Alsace, this region in eastern France is a storybook place to grow grapes. Church steeples pierce the sky in villages that look lifted from a Hollywood set, and the wine is among the most crystalline and expressive in the country.
Wine Spectator called this 2013 Réserve Pinot Gris “an elegant version that should open up nicely.” That was in 2016. Five years later, it’s showing the ambrosial depth that maturing Pinot Gris tends to acquire, balanced by youthful fruit coursing through every sip. Aromas of preserved lemon, apricot, chamomile, and herbs preview an enchanting palate full of fruit vibrancy and exotic spice.
This 2013 is “an impressively good food wine” says the Wine Advocate, showing why Pinot Gris from Alsace is a restaurant favorite around the world. It’s the same variety as Italian Pinot Grigio, but often brings a richer texture and more generous fruit and spice notes, pairing just as easily with aromatic Thai dishes as it does with classic fried ones from the American South.
Trimbach has been helping to define the region since 1626, and today, the wines of Alsace are synonymous with the family name. All of Trimbach’s wines reflect the centuries of knowledge that have allowed them to remain so indispensable for nearly 400 years. All that experience comes to bear in this 2013, a perfectly cellared gem that’s absolutely singing right now.
