Oakville’s Most Hallowed Intersection
The intersection of Silverado Trail and Oakville Cross is home to some of the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon terroir in the world.
That’s a statement of fact, backed up every year by wines from Dalla Valle, Peter Michael, BOND, Screaming Eagle—and by David Ramey’s Pedregal Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.
Rarely do we see so many stars align as in this library release:
- The 2013 vintage, which Robert Parker rated 98 points and called “one of the most epic and awesome vintages the north coast of California has ever produced.”
- Pedregal Vineyard, a little postage stamp planted in 85% basalt scree in the most privileged corner of Oakville. It’s a de facto monopole for Ramey.
- Grapes farmed by Ramey’s own viticultural team, who planted Pedregal in 1990 and know it intimately.
- The expert work of Ramey, who is without a doubt one of the greatest winemakers in the United States.
With over 40 vintages under his belt, Ramey is famous for two things: not suffering fools, and making wine of sterling quality and longevity. He learned from the best of the best: After working in France at Château Pétrus, Ramey helped establish four pillars of Napa and Sonoma wine: Dominus Estate, Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, and Rudd Estate. Starting in 1996, he poured all his expertise into his namesake winery, Ramey Cellars.
Since 2004, he’s crafted a Cabernet from Oakville’s rocky Pedregal Vineyard. He has a long-term lease on the site and is the only one making wine from it. Only 615 cases were made of the 2013, so we feel privileged to have secured some from Ramey’s library. It’s the perfect special-occasion wine, and it will be for years to come.
