A Reach Into Patel’s Sought-After Cellar
You won’t often find Patel wines outside of boutique Napa wine shops—especially bottles from Robert Parker’s “game-changer” vintage that have spent eight years aging in the cool estate cellars. That’s what makes this 2013 Red Wine exactly the type of local secret that we love to let Wine Access members in on.
This is the kind of wine that welcomes you into Napa’s inner circles—a back-vintage release from an estate that has earned near-perfect ratings from our members, and that Vinous founder Antonio Galloni called “one of the most distinctive” tiny-production labels in Napa Valley.
Because our members have ranked Patel wines up there with some of our highest-scoring red wines—from wineries like Immortal Estate, Cliff Lede, and Anderson Conn Valley—we’ve got access to this sumptuous cellar treasure.
Patel only made 175 cases of this 2013, and only a fraction of those exist now. Built on Merlot and Petit Verdot, this bottle packs the plushness and complexity to captivate Right Bank collectors, while touting Napa Valley’s bold red- and black-fruit purity. Vinous loved its “gorgeous up-front fruit and terrific overall balance.” Wine Enthusiast called it “succulently smooth.” We let the silence around our tasting table speak for itself. This wine is enthralling.
The 2013 Patel hails from a vintage that Vinous said, “might one day be regarded as one of the all-time great vintages for Napa Valley.” The second year of a drought with a long, stable summer, it produced grapes of rich fruit flavor and well-integrated tannins. Wine Enthusiast said 2013 Napa reds “show the stuff that cellaring dreams are made of,” and after eight years, this wine proves them right.
To maximize the power of that phenomenal vintage, the Patel team followed a detail-obsessed regimen. They hand-sorted the clusters, destemmed the grapes, then hand-sorted those. After crush, they laid the wine down for a lavish 19-month rest in 100% new French Oak from Darnajou, one of St.-Émilion’s finest artisan coopers, giving the wine its velvety polish and spice-inflected depth.
This back-vintage treasure is one you definitely don’t want to miss, especially at such a fantastic price.
