Tapping Patel’s Precious Cellar
When a great vintage and some of the top talent in the wine world combine, you can bet there will be magic in the bottle. That’s exactly what’s in the 2013 Patel Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, a gorgeous, perfectly aged US-exclusive from a Wine Access favorite.
Patel’s last library Cab wowed our notoriously tough-to-please Cabernet fans to the tune of 31 four-star and a staggering 30 five-star ratings, with one superfan summing it up as “Epic.” And we think Patel’s Cabernet from Robert Parker’s “game-changer” 2013 vintage—with its power, elegance, and juicy, integrated tannins developing into a lengthy finish—might be even better.
Normally, the combination of Patel’s 99-point winemaker and one of the best vintages in Napa Valley history would mean a price that rises as the exquisite wine ages. But because Wine Access members adored our last library vintage of this gorgeous Cabernet, we knocked on the Patel cellar and negotiated a top-notch deal on their 2013 Cab. This is a rare shot at a perfectly aged stunner, coming from the estate with perfect provenance.
Knowing the reputation among Wine Access members, we had high expectations when the 2013 crossed our tasting table, and we were believers before we took a second sip. The wine that Vinous said had “considerable intensity and tannic clout to back it up” on release has now taken on beautiful softness and depth, the dark fruits dressed with freshly roasted espresso beans, graphite, mint, and vanilla bean amounting to an absolutely beguiling Cabernet.
We can thank our close relationship with winemaker Julien Fayard for our rare access to the 2013 Patel Cabernet, which has been resting in the winery’s cellars since bottling. If you missed out on our last Patel library offer—or if you stocked up but are already tapped out—this is your chance to claim this Cabernet, available until our 40 cases are sold out.
We don’t expect that to take too long. Patel, after all, is one of the hottest properties in Napa: Robert Parker himself rated the inaugural Proprietary Red 95 points, calling the winery an “impressive discovery.” In the years since then, Patel’s reputation has only grown. These days, that name is one of the few that is whispered about in hushed tones by in-the-know sommeliers who want to keep this Napa gem a secret.
With apologies, then, we’re letting the word out right now to Wine Access members. The 2013 Patel Cabernet Sauvignon is singing right now, a phenomenal example of what happens when top talent, an unusually perfect vintage, and a few years in a cool Napa Valley cellar come together. It’s magic, and we can’t wait for you to share in it.
