Hundred Acre: Way Past Perfect
Hundred Acre is one of the few cult California wines that evokes such reverence that ratings and reviews are almost beside the point. But the 2013 Wraith’s perfect Wine Advocate score came with one of the most unequivocally laudatory statements we’ve ever read:
“This wine totally resets the benchmark for 100 points.”
In other words, the 2013 Hundred Acre Wraith raises the possibility of there being a winemaking ideal beyond perfection. The work of winemaking genius Jayson Woodbridge, this is the summit of Napa Cabernet. Sourced from three different sites—whose vineyard-designate wines all earned perfect scores in 2013—Wraith is deep, dark, and concentrated, and shows a majestic nose of blackberry compote, Chambord, and an array of violets and lilacs that overwhelm the senses. Joined by hints of graphite and crushed rock, this wine is profound and generous, with broad tannins and a complex finish full of espresso and red fruits.
This is the kind of Cabernet that makes a collection—one that will draw the gaze of anyone who walks past it in your cellar, and a gasp from whomever you choose to share it with (if anyone). Between the vintage, the pedigree, the quality, and rarity, this bottle represents the pinnacle of wine, anywhere in the world. It’s that simple.
Collectors wait for years to get on the Hundred Acre list, and we’re sure some of Wine Access’s most ardent Cabernet devotees are patiently waiting their turn. And because our VP of Wine Eduardo has had a ten-year friendship with Hundred Acre, we are able to offer a few cases of this special bottling. They’ve been resting untouched in the Hundred Acre cellars, and will go to the quickest among the Cabernet collectors who want to gild their cellars with some of the finest and rarest wine on the planet.
Winemaker Jayson Woodbridge has elevated Hundred Acre to a level of quality and demand that many winemakers spend a lifetime trying to attain, and he has done it relatively quickly: He scored a 97-point wine in his very first vintage, 100 points in just his third vintage, and has averaged more than one perfect wine per year since then—a total of 19 over 14 years (and that’s just from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate!). It’s been an astonishing rise for a vintner whose interest in anything less than perfection is nil.
At the beginning, Hundred Acre’s Cabernet lineup consisted only of single-vineyard wines. Then came Wraith. Crafted from top barrels from Hundred Acre’s three estate vineyards—Kayli Morgan east of St. Helena, Ark Vineyard on Howell Mountain, and Few and Far Between in Calistoga—2013 is the inaugural vintage of Wraith, the first in an unfathomably auspicious debut: Now three vintages in, no Wraith bottling has earned less than 100 points from Wine Advocate.
We’re incredibly lucky to have this allocation, and invite you to experience a Napa Cabernet that exists beyond perfection.
