93-point Fabre Montmayou Malbec Reserva: Backtracking on Redux … 1,500 bottles
Years ago, realizing that we’d been disappointing members with offers that they could buy once but never again, we devised a program called REDUX to give buyers a second chance. The rules were simple enough. During negotiations with wineries, we asked suppliers to hold back a second allocation. Should their wines receive high ratings from buyers on the first salvo, and there was sufficient inventory, WineAccess would get a second chance 3-4 months after publishing the first offer.
In the case of the critically acclaimed 2013 Fabre Montmayou Malbec Reserva — at 92 points, equaling what we believe to be the highest score ever afforded to an under-$14 Malbec — Hervé Fabre initially agreed to the terms of REDUX. But three months ago, the former Argentinian Winemaker of the Year backtracked.
Given the followup review by former Wine Spectator bureau chief James Suckling, you could hardly blame M. Fabre.
Nearly a year after publishing his rave 92-point review, Suckling re-tasted this deep, dark, perfectly elegant Malbec, drawn from high-elevation plantings in the heart of Luján de Cuyo. Suckling’s adjectives were much the same, but unfortunately for the WineAccess membership, the score changed. Suckling UPGRADED the 2013 Fabre Montmayou Malbec Reserva from a lofty 92 points to an unheard-of 93. Twenty importers filled the Fabre Montmayou inbox with purchase orders. Our REDUX “allocation” was trimmed accordingly.
The 2013 Malbec Reserva is deep black-purple to the rim. High-toned and vibrant aromatically, with almost liqueur-like aromas of black cherry, small black fruits, violets, licorice, and white pepper. Big, rich, and densely concentrated, still finely delineated in an almost Left Bank way, featuring chewy texture and plush flavors of blackberry and sweet herbs. Finishes with unusually “serious” tannins for a Malbec in this price range, arguing eloquently for a 5-year rest in a cool cellar.
Our last 1,500 bottles just hit port. Still $13.99 … for the next hour or two. Shipping included on 12 bottles or more.
