2012 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Ornellaia DOC Bolgheri Superiore (1.5 L) Magnum

For lovers of the original Super Tuscan all stars — it doesn’t get any better than this. The 2012 Ornellaia is a balanced and opulent Bordeaux-blend primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon, with good dose of Merlot, and a sprinkling of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot -- and one that is extremely approachable today. We were able to inspect every bottle and can attest to their perfect provenance and condition, having sat in a cool, dark temperature-controlled space at 56 degrees since arriving Stateside. A critical darling, James Suckling found this 2012 bottling “a cooler style of Ornellaia, bringing it back to the classicism of this celebrated region,” and pinned on 97 points. 

For Super Tuscan collectors this is a showpiece MAGNUM bottle positively not to be missed. Well integrated and impressively silky at its young age, the Ornellaia has a powerful Bordeaux-like structure and gorgeous fruit purity on the mid-palate. Some of the finest Bordeaux blends in the world today are coming out of the Bolgheri Coast of Southern Tuscany. Perhaps none other than Ornellaia, which is at the top of its game, right up there with Sassicaia and Massetto — and we’re not alone is suggesting that these beauties are beginning to outpace some of the most established Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux properties.
