Vinous: “Airy, Gracious, and So Wonderfully Inviting”
The 2012 Bollinger Grande Année is the ultimate expression of one of the world’s greatest Champagnes. That’s how we’ve felt from the moment we first tasted it at the estate, just after the London launch preview that had Decanter raving: “Here we are again, bombarded with superlatives for yet another extraordinarily eloquent expression of the brand which, by definition, has to represent the fruits of a great year—and a great year only.”
Our first allocation of this gorgeous vintage Champagne disappeared quickly. Ditto our second. The Wine Access members who claimed those bottles have crowned the 2012 Grande Année with a 4.65 rating that puts it with some of the most iconic and expensive wines we offer. That honor comes in addition to 97 points from Wine Spectator—which earned the wine the #10 spot on their 2020 Top 100—and a place among Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2020.
La Grande Année is only produced in exceptional vintages, and in Champagne, 2012 was an extraordinary year in many ways. Described to us as “miraculous” by monsieur De Rivoire and deemed “exceptional” by Jancis Robinson, the grapes came in small and thick-skinned. They proved to be wonderfully ripe and pack an exemplary level of acidity, not unlike those of the1996 vintage—which collectors will recall as extraordinary.
This is a golden opportunity to add Bollinger’s tête de cuvée (and the signature wine of James Bond) to your cellar at a price far below the Champagne—or Grand Année—standard. No matter what you’re celebrating in the next 20 years, the 2012 La Grande Année is the wine you’ll want to mark the occasion.
