Jonathan Maltus has crafted an outstanding Vieux Château Mazerat from the same stellar terroir and blockbuster vintage as his 100-point 2010 Le Dôme. The Robert Parker 95+ point Mazerat keeps pace with its big brother at less than a third of the 2010 Le Dôme’s $300 price tag. Described by Parker as “Impressively endowed and built like a skyscraper,” Parker suggests this spectacular Saint-Émilion Grand Cru will reward farsighted collectors for 25-30 years. A blend of 65% Merlot with 35% Cabernet Franc from vines planted in 1947, Parker describes the wine as “full-bodied, with an abundance of floral notes as well as black currant and blackberry fruit.” Direct from the cool Châteaux cellars, this is great Saint-Émilion in perfect condition with perfect provenance.  

2010 is one of the greatest vintages in Bordeaux history. Robert Parker is definitive, “I have tasted enough wines from 2005, 2009 and 2010 to realize that these may be the three greatest Bordeaux vintages I have tasted in my career.”  At seven years old, it’s getting harder to obtain Châteaux-direct 2010s, but our deep contacts with this tight-knit community gives our clients privileged access.

In 1994, one of three brothers who shared ownership of Vieux Château Mazerat decided to sell. Jonathan Maltus snapped up the piece of land, which neighbors St. Émilion Grand Cru Classé (A) Château Angélus. Maltus called his wine from this exceptional terroir “Le Dôme,” and it took him 16 short years to make history: In 2010, Le Dôme scored 100 points.  In 2008, when the remaining brothers decided to sell the entirety of Mazerat, their first call was to Château Angélus. But the historic estate dithered. Their second call went to Jonathan Maltus.

Vieux Château Mazerat’s rise under Maltus has made Le Dôme’s ascent appear leisurely, as it immediately began clocking scores in the mid- and upper 90s. The Mazerat from the same 2010 vintage that produced a flawless Le Dôme has the critics raving: Robert Parker gives it a 95+ and Wine Enthusiast concurs with a 95 and ‘Cellar Selection’ designation.
