One of Opus One’s Crowning Achievements

In 1978, Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild cemented their plan for Opus One, the idea for which had been cooking since the men first met eight years earlier. Now, over four decades after the first vintage, Opus One stands with the great Bordeaux-style wines of the world.

One taste is all you need to realize how impressive this 2010 Opus One is—and how much it’s blossomed in the decade since it went into barrel. It’s broad and open, with bold aromas, a beautifully balanced structure on the palate, and the kind of nuance that can only be achieved through bottle age.

Opus One grows on four unique vineyard plots in the choicest section of Napa Valley’s Oakville: the Ballestra and River Parcels, which flank the winery itself, and To Kalon North and South, located across Highway 29. At harvest, the fruit goes directly into the immaculate winery, where 175 acres’ worth of grapes are judged, one by one, as worthy or unworthy of Opus One. From vineyard to tank, the journey rarely takes more than twelve hours.

When it was first released, James Suckling called the 2010 Opus “one of the best ever.” Vinous described it as “a fabulous vintage that combines the structure and energy of a cold vintage with the ripeness of a warm year,” and when they revisited the wine just last year, they said “it's hard to imagine that this site could give more.”

This is a gorgeous bottle from one of the planet’s most iconic wineries, a crowning achievement that will be an asset to any cellar and bring tons of pleasure, now and in the future.
