Need to Explain Pauillac to Someone? Give Them Lynch-Bages

Thanks to owner Jean-Charles Cazes (and his father Jean-Michel before him) and chief winemaker Daniel Llose, Château Lynch-Bages has revealed itself to be one of the most consistently excellent wines of Pauillac on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Lynch-Bages wines have shown no noticeable weaknesses in the last three decades and, while officially classified as a Fifth Growth, professionals and enthusiasts consider it more a “Super Second.”

Lynch-Bages is always seductive, direct, and generous with ample fruit and sweetness. In infancy, however, it is a discreet wine, and we were fortunate enough to get our hands on the 2010 Lynch-Bages — Wine Spectator’s textbook definition of a perfect Pauillac.

Suggesting that “if you ever need to explain Pauillac to someone, give them this,” Wine Spectator raved about the 2010 Lynch-Bages’ “great range, character and typicity,” tacking on 96 points and a drinking window lasting another two decades. Robert Parker matched that 96-point score for this “absolutely brilliant” wine “with notable power” and “extraordinary concentration and precision.” Higher still was James Suckling at 98 points, who marveled at “such elegance and ethereal quality” in his glass.
