    A Dream Library Rioja

Wine Spectator called the 2010 Rioja harvest the “best in 50 years.” Wine Advocate has never rated a Rioja vintage higher. All that buzz spawned a buying frenzy, and now perfectly preserved, winery-direct 2010 Reservas are extremely difficult to find. But our Master Sommelier Sur Lucero, on a recent trip to Spain, scored a Rioja Reserva that shows the power of the vintage and the magic that occurs with nearly fifteen years of cellar age.

Bodegas Escudero dates back more than a century, to when Juan Escudero first started making wine in a small mountainside cave. The winery gained momentum when Juan’s grandson Benito, inspired by his father and grandfather, dove into the family business. He studied at the Requena School of Oenology and later at the Villafranca del Penedés School of Oenology.

The Bodegas Escudero wines are sourced from the family’s holdings in La Rioja and Navarra—vineyards whose vines average 70 years of age. Serna Solar de Becquer hails from the Cuesta la Reina estate, located on a sun-drenched hillside. Hand-harvested and selected in the vineyard, it was fermented in stainless steel tanks on indigenous yeasts before spending at least 18 months in aged American oak, during which it was racked three times. Although the oak aging is crucial, it’s only part of the story of this exceptional bottle, which has been resting in the winery cellars since the all-time great 2010 vintage. Now blossoming fully, it’s a prime example of why we think vintage Rioja is one of the most precious wine experiences available.

*We recommend using an Ah-So wine opener to enjoy this bottling, as aged corks are delicate and may crumble or break easily.
