Every wine lover should experience a decade-old Rioja Gran Reserva from a great vintage, but the price of admission is generally high, creeping well into triple digits for the best examples.
Leave it to our Master Sommelier, Sur Lucero, to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Thanks to his long friendship with a gifted Spanish importer that dates back to his pre-Master Somm days, he landed us the incredible 2010 Añares Rioja Gran Reserva.
From a vintage rated “Excellent” by the Rioja DOCa Regulatory Council and 95 points by Wine Advocate—their highest score for a Rioja vintage ever—this Gran Reserva is the kind of flawlessly aged wine we pine for.
It’s not surprising to see this quality and value from Añares, which belongs to Bodegas Olarra. For almost 50 years, Olarra has produced top-flight reds, combining the region’s time-honored winemaking methods with state-of-the-art technologies and cutting-edge design.
The winery’s iconic three-winged building is breathtaking. Its barrel-room roof, a remarkable assemblage of 111 hexagonal domes, is designed to prevent sharp temperature changes in the cellar. This is absolutely crucial for Rioja wines, which require careful aging.
The 2010 Rioja Gran Reserva, made from 80% Tempranillo plus equal parts of Mazuelo (Carignan) and Garnacha, was aged for 26 months in French and American barriques, followed by 11 years in bottle in the cool cellar.
Many producers of classic Rioja stick to tradition by not releasing their bottlings until they’re ready to drink. The 2010 Añares Gran Reserva fits into that proud heritage, as the winery has not only carefully handled the storage, but has removed the burden and temptation that come with having to cellar a bottle for decades.
