The Depth of Well-Aged Vintage Champagne
Founded in 1777—now that is Champagne history.
R. Renaudin is an ancient Champagne house, and in our opinion, one of the finest mid-size houses in the region. They’re headquartered in the village of Moussy, and their 24 hectares of holdings are all in the villages of Moussy and Pierry, just south of the famed city of Épernay—la Capitale du Champagne—and just north of the famed Côte des Blancs.
The Renaudin house was originally the property of a military officer in King Louis XVI’s royal army, Pierre Louis de Failly. After retiring from the army, de Failly was exiled due to the French Revolution, and the Renaudin family took over the property. They rebuilt it, year by year, generation after generation. Today they’re astoundingly successful growers, selling roughly 80% of their fruit to other houses and bottling barely 4,000 cases under their own name.
L'Espiègle Blanc de Blancs is 100% Chardonnay from the Premier Cru Village of Pierry, raised for eight months in older barrels with malolactic fermentation blocked. It’s then aged for over three years en tirage—plus many more in the bottle—before release
This 2009, from an excellent vintage, is old-school Champagne at its very finest, showing a golden color and distinctive nutty, mushroomy character. It’s a Champagne for gastronomy: a perfect for pairing with savory dishes and main courses.
Only about 1,000 cases were made, and Wine Access is one of the only places you’ll find it in the US!
