    A “Big Boy Brunello,” Matured

It’s extremely rare for us to score a Brunello with more than a decade of age on it—in fact, we haven’t had the chance to offer one in years. However, we now have a stunning library riserva from a producer our members absolutely love.

“This Big Boy Brunello will appeal to those who love the most luscious and opulent side of Sangiovese,” wrote Wine Advocate about 2009 Andretta Brunello Riserva when it was released back in 2015. Since then, it’s been lying motionless in Guido Andretta and Rosalba Vitanza’s cellar, patiently awaiting its time in the limelight.

This blockbuster Brunello still packs all the power it did in its youth, but now shows the intrigue and wisdom that comes with a decade of age. It shows exactly why aging a Brunello riserva is well worth it, and why claiming one that’s been aged for you is a complete no-brainer.

Winemaker Rosalba Vitanza created this bottle because her husband, Guido Andretta, had long been bugging her to make his favorite style of Brunello: muscular and rich, with more French-oak aging. As a gift for their 10th anniversary, she launched Andretta, a new label that would specialize in that style. The winery’s Brunello di Montalcino Riserva hails from their Vigna Il Lupo (Wolf Vineyards) property, located in the warm Castelnuovo dell’Abate subzone. Comprising 100% Sangiovese Grosso, the wine aged for 36 months in French oak tonneaux before bottling.

Over a decade past harvest, it’s showing beautifully.
