“I Have Never Been More Pleased with a Wine”
“In nearly 20 years of buying wine from Wine Access,” the member wrote, “I have never been more pleased with a wine from you, and its QPR, than this 20 year old Cab from Young Ridge."
The Young Ridge was a massive coup for us, and we were sure that it was a one-time thing. But the member raves were extremely motivating—“Absolutely stunning” wrote one, and the overall ratings are 4.56—and we managed to wrest a tiny bit of Young Ridge’s 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Premium Estate from the winery.
Aged 16 years in the Young Ridge cellars, this deep-ruby drink-now Cabernet shows superb aromatics of black cherry, cassis, violets and lilac, plus a beautifully integrated palate with nice spice and a silky texture. The fact that it’s been carefully cellared—all you have to do is swoop in 16 years after harvest and enjoy the hell out of it—make it a can’t-miss for the aged-Cabernet lovers (note the careful hyphen placement there) in our ranks.
Young Ridge has been hiding in plain sight since 1995, when founders LeRoy and Patty Young produced their first Cabernet from their two acres of vines in east Napa, planted in 1992. Not long after, they purchased a 99-acre vineyard in Napa County’s Pope Valley, where they built a winery production facility. They hired winemaker Julianna Beckmann Gosling, who learned her craft through stints at Robert Mondavi Winery, Beaulieu Vineyard, and Sterling Vineyards.
16-year-old Cabernets are tough to find. We hope you enjoy this one.
