Instant Gratification: Perfectly Cellared Palmer
Straight from 17th century cellars in Margaux to your glass: This is how to drink top-tier Bordeaux.
Unmoved in 14 years, the towering 2007 Château Palmer is a rare library release from one of Bordeaux’s greatest estates—as Robert Parker put it, Palmer “should be a First Growth.” Over the last decade and a half, this Left Bank icon has unfolded with untold grace and undiminished power, drawing forth a heady mélange of Claro tobacco, dried red rose petal, and worn leather from dark-fruited, earthy depths.
Combining rare access with perfect provenance, the 2007 Château Palmer delivers an elevated and highly collectible Bordeaux opportunity. It’s ready to drink today, and we highly recommend opening this special bottle with an Ah-So before gently decanting the wine.
With a history dating back to the 17th century, Château Palmer has represented Bordeaux excellence across the ages, standing shoulder to shoulder with its next-door neighbors: First Growth Château Margaux, and heavyweights Rauzan-Ségla and Château d'Issan.
Palmer’s trademark aromatic delicacy and elegance—on full display in the 2007’s silky texture and high-toned bouquet of black currant, smokey charcoal and violet—can be traced to the estate’s higher proportion of Merlot (planted on the best gravel parcels), which matches the amount planted to Cabernet Sauvignon—a unique practice on the Left Bank that makes Palmer stand out even among the best.
Since coming on in 2004, winemaker and CEO Thomas Duroux—a protégé of Robert Mondavi who previously oversaw Italy’s Ornellaia—has transformed Palmer into one of Bordeaux’s few entirely biodynamic estates, and embraced the property’s soil diversity, matching different approaches with vine age and rootstock to the estate’s 16 distinct soil types. The result has been a succession of vintages in which Duroux managed the impossible feat of balancing richness with freshness, power with grace.
As Duroux once told us, “It takes a decade for a Palmer wine to reach its full measure of aromatic complexity.” The 2007 amply demonstrates why it’s worth the wait. Precision, focus, subtlety, and nuance are here in spades, offering a master class in the virtues of patience.
But there’s no need to wait any longer. This well-cellared Palmer has been perfectly taken care of, and is ready to deliver the best of Margaux immediately.
