Sometimes, a great wine just slips through the cracks—the vinous equivalent of a $100 bill that hides out in your coat pocket, waiting for you to discover it.

That’s the 2007 Château Nenin Pomerol.

This wine should have been in the cellars of every Bordeaux enthusiast with an eye for the best terroirs of the Right Bank. Instead, it was released to a wine market in turmoil, as Lehman Brothers imploded, the stock market crashed, and luxury spending cratered.

Now, 15 years after it went into barrel, it’s gloriously mature—prime-time Pomerol, grown just a short stroll from Vieux Château Certan, La Conseillante, and Le Pin. It shows off the charm and finesse that made the 2007 Bordeaux Jancis Robinson’s “vintage of choice from a restaurant wine list” for years.

Nenin employs 100-point icon Michel Rolland as their consulting winemaker, and the wines he produces here are some of the most structured in Pomerol—and usually require decades of age to come around. But the 2007 vintage’s cool start and late warmth in September allowed him to craft a wine with plenty of elegance out of the gate. As such, it’s in its optimal drinking window now.

Now, this outstanding Merlot-dominated Pomerol is ready for your table—and its age and elegance make it a remarkably versatile partner. Still robust enough to handle a broiled New York strip, its savoriness also makes it a wonderful pairing for mushroom risotto or coq au vin. No matter what you drink it with, make sure you serve it with plenty of excitement—after all, how often do you find a Benjamin in your pocket?
