There Is Nothing Like Aged Meursault
There is nothing in the world like well-aged white Burgundy. And with access to top Burgundies becoming harder and harder to come by, bottles from top appellations and vineyards have turned into impossible-to-find unicorns.
Well, almost impossible. Fortunately, our wine team has a knack for finding rare and extraordinary bottles—and that’s exactly what the 2006 Domaine Darviot-Perrin Les Genevrières Premier Cru Meursault is. A library vintage that’s showing a stunning youthfulness under its well-earned toasted hazelnut notes, it’s drinking beautifully right now. That said, it’s got the legs to last a couple more decades in the cellar—if you can keep your hands off it.
Didier Darviot learned the trade from his father-in-law, Pierre Perrin, who was a legendary figure in the winemaking circles of Meursault and Volnay. Domaine Darviot was established in 1989, and sits in the heart of the Côte de Beaune.
Darviot farms their vineyards organically, using compost as fertilizer and eschewing insecticides and weedkiller. They hand-sort the grapes in the vineyard, press them in whole bunches, and allow the must to settle for 24 hours. The wine ferments with indigenous yeasts in barrels at a controlled temperature, ages for a year in 25% new oak barrels, then spends six months more in steel vats.
The wine has a vibrancy that makes it ageworthy, but it’s utterly charming at the moment—a perfect match for a succulent lobster, a crispy roast chicken, or aged French cheeses like Comté or Mimolette.
