Last Call: 2004 Quinta do Noval “Nacional”

Before we agreed to terms with Quinta do Noval’s importer for the 2012 Vintage Port, we cut a followup deal. For every 30 bottles of the 2012 Vintage Port sold on WineAccess, Managing Director Christian Seely agreed to dip into the Noval library and offer a single bottle of one of the greatest Ports of the last 50 years — the 97-point 2004 Quinta do Noval “Nacional.”

Here’s why Seely is so stingy.

While legendary Quinta do Noval spans 145 hectares, its worldwide fame is rooted in a tiny, 2-hectare patch of 6,000 ungrafted vines that yields the extraordinary “Nacional.” In a beautifully written piece published in The Wine Advocate on May 1st, 2014, Robert Parker’s protégé, Neil Martin, offered a two-decade retrospective on “Nacional,” including tasting notes on wines dating back to 1994.

The Wine Advocate’s top-rated “Nacional” was the 100-point 2011. If you want a bottle, it will set you back at least $1,000. Finishing a close second was this magnificent 2004, which Martin described as “pure class, a hedonistic Nacional surfeit with swagger and style” -- before suggesting that it won’t hit its peak until 2050!

97 points from Parker’s Wine Advocate. $750 on the auction market. Thanks to all our Port collectors on WineAccess who hit the “buy” button on the 2012 Vintage Port. In turn, Seely kept his word and another 20 bottles have been lifted out of their quiet slumber in the dusty cellars at Quinta do Noval. Just $475/bottle today, only on WineAccess. Shipping included on all orders.
