Perfection in 1855...And Ever Since
Few estates on the planet inspire reverence like Château Margaux.
It was the only Classified Growth to earn a perfect score in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, and this First Growth has never stopped pursuing perfection since.
Château Margaux is one of the wine world’s true icons. Not only did the First Growth set the pace in the original 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, but it’s been one of the most resolutely traditional estates—combining impeccable quality with a sense of history like few others in wine.
By the 17th century, Château Margaux was almost the exact same size as it is today—so the terroir that informs the grand vin has remained nearly unchanged—and it was nearly as famous, as well. By 1771, Margaux became the first Claret to be sold at Christies, and Thomas Jefferson visited on his trip through Bordeaux, declaring “there couldn’t be a better Bordeaux bottle.”
1982 was a watershed vintage in Bordeaux—Robert Parker made his name as a reviewer by identifing its greatness early—and the wines from its warm summer have become legends in the intervening 40+ years. Margaux was one of the standouts, and this wine is stunning in its completeness and maturity. Cellared perfectly from bottling to our warehouse, it's truly one of the great experiences in wine.
