One of California’s Best Sauvignon Blancs

We’re huge fans of Napa’s greatest Sauvignon Blancs—complex wines that display that unique combination of power, complexity, and verve. And Maayan Koschitzky’s La Pelle’s Sauvignon Blanc is right up there with the best of them.

It’s not surprising that it’s qualitatively a peer with basically anything in the Valley. After all, La Pelle’s Maayan Koschitzky, Director of Winemaking at Atelier Melka, has Screaming Eagle’s $4,000 Blanc on his résumé, and he’s earned a slew of 100-point scores as consultant to a constellation of Napa stars.

The wine is grown on a dry-farmed, organic old-vine site in St. Helena, fermented at low temperatures in 100% oak, and kept on the lees for 18 months. Production is capped at 300 cases per year. It sells out nearly instantly whenever they offer it.

This is one of the smallest-production wines La Pelle makes, and while the winery has become justifiably famous for its Cabernet, their Sauvignon Blanc has been one of their signatures from the start. “Pur Sang by Dagueneau has always been the biggest inspiration for this wine,” Maayan told us. “You get the minerals, lots of crushed rock, but still a lot of the California sun.”

This is seriously impressive stuff: bold and expressive on the nose, with plenty of green mango, citrus, and an undergirding flintiness. The palate is exceptionally complex, with a beautiful richness that balances texture and a vibrant finish.
