    A Legend Steers Us Right

Cecil De Loach is one of Sonoma’s modern pioneers, the man who put the Russian River Valley AVA on the map. First known for his De Loach label, he’s now turned his focus to Hook & Ladder, the winery whose name pays homage to his career as a San Francisco firefighter.

A blend of grapes grown at De Loach’s Los Amigos Ranch—including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Sangiovese—the 2021 TIllerman Red Blend is a bold, balanced, and structured red that goes with just about every situation, from a backyard barbecue to a cozy night by the fire. Aged 18 months in European and American oak, it boasts a gorgeous silky texture that will prime your palate for another sip.

The 148 vineyard acres that make up the Hook & Ladder estate are the parcels that Cecil De Loach kept for himself when he sold his eponymous winery in 2003—the vines he couldn’t give up when he “retired” following an illustrious 30-year career. How illustrious? He was the man who pioneered the use of Russian River Valley on labels and pushed the AVA to superstardom through terroir-driven excellence.

Cecil’s simple goal with these vineyards was to make estate wines that his friends could afford to drink, specifically the pals he had from his days fighting fires in the City by the Bay. Named after De Loach’s former job—the Tillerman is the firefighter who steers the back of a hook & ladder truck—this is the anytime bottle that every cellar needs. You’ll be shocked at how fast it goes.
