Alexander Valley’s Elite Grower Since 1982

    “Wow. That is good.”

These are the four words we heard at a summer barbecue here in Napa Valley. We had just poured the 2020 Stuhlmuller Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon for our guests, a pack of Cab fanatics. The moment reminded us of how much we love seeing my guests’ eyes light up when they taste something we’ve picked out for the evening—and then quickly pour themselves a bigger glass.

The bottle disappeared in ten minutes, much faster than the racks of St. Louis ribs could come off the Traeger. It’s no wonder that in the North Coast Wine Challenge—a blind tasting conducted by The Santa Rosa Press Democrat—the Stuhlmuller took Double Gold, Best-of-Class honors and scored 98 points against some pretty tough competitors.

The Stuhlmuller Vineyard enjoys a special combination of river benchland gravels and very rocky hillsides—a perfect habitat for Cabernet Sauvignon. Fritz Stuhlmuller has long supplied grapes to Alexander Valley icons like Jordan and another BIG steakhouse superstar I can’t name, but he keeps back less than 10% of his best fruit for his own wines. That fruit makes up the core of his 2020 Sonoma County Cabernet.

We sample a lot of Cab at Wine Access, and we rarely taste something so complete for the price. Rarely is there this much pure blue and black fruit in the glass for the money—in fact, it reminds us of great examples we’ve had from Laurel Glen ($100). This is an all-star by the grill in the summer and fall, and an ideal fireside warmer to get you through the winter. Perfect!
