    Petite Sirah: Think Big

Master Sommelier Sur Lucero’s verdict on the phenomenal 2019 Clay Shannon Petite Sirah was clear: “This is a great call for all who love not just Petite Sirah, but Zinfandel, Syrah, and red blends with massive amounts of rich purple, black and red fruit and a little kick of spice.”

Sur had just returned from a visit to the sprawling Clay Shannon estate, which covers 2,000 acres of High Valley AVA ridges and valleys on the east side of Clear Lake. After two long days of negotiations to get this limited allocation, he’d come home grinning ear to ear. Here is a 100% estate-grown, certified organic, high-elevation Petite Sirah that stands toe-to-toe with bottles from the Napa Valley just 40 minutes to the south.

This is a big Petite Sirah, befitting a big estate and the big vision of its owner, Clay Shannon. It’s He’s attracted a key consulting enologist (who we can’t name) who would NEVER sign on for anything less than the best. Next to vineyard impresario Andy Beckstoffer, who has also invested heavily in cultivating the region’s potential, practically no one else is operating on the same scale in Lake County.

With only about half its total acreage covered by vines, the Clay Shannon estate practically boasts its own ecosystem. The hills are windier than at the lake level, but warmer in the evenings. In the mornings, you can see the fog settling at lower elevations. These conditions help focus the ripening of the grapes. The berries are tiny, the tannins are huge yet refined, and the resulting Petite Sirah is so impressive it might just inspire you to go see the place yourself.
