Rescued From Obscurity, Valencia’s Under-$20 Diamond in the Rough

Rescued From Obscurity, Valencia’s Under-$20 Diamond in the Rough

Spain’s Bodegas Mustiguillo Mestizaje Tinto, which marries the richness and piercing aromatics of Grenache with scintillating acidity and brooding, cigar-smoke seriousness, is the next big thing in Spanish wine, and about to be launched into the international spotlight. It’s the kind of wine in-the-know drinkers clamor for, and today is your shot to discover this hot category that rarely surfaces in the United States.

“All of my customers in New York used to beg for this wine,” our own Vanessa Conlin explained, beaming with excitement when she shared this crimson red with our team. “It’s one of the best values on the market, and I’m buying a case.”

Today, we invite you to follow Vanessa’s lead, and get the early bird discount on a case-buy Spanish wine that dances between playful and profound, infusing bright cassis and blackberry with savory smokiness and mineral, tannic cut, all brought to vivid life by mouth-watering acidity.

Early proponents of Bobal’s palate-staining potential helped wines like this blackberry and cassis-scented Mestizaje come to the attention of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, which has since poured praised on the top Bobal producers, calling this wine “Juicy and tasty,” and “very good quality for the price asked,” which at most stores is $20.

Few have realized the potential of this high-altitude, windswept region of Spain like Bodegas Mustiguillo and its founder Toni Sarrion, who has led Mustiguillo to be named one of Wine & Spirits Top 100 wineries, and credited with releasing “wines of depth, complexity and texture” by the New York Times.

One look at Sarrion’s vineyards and the balance of freshness and concentration instantly makes sense. Situated at 2,700 feet in elevation, the gnarled vines absorb their mineral subtlety from the limestone soils, buffeted by coastal winds from the east and the warm La Mancha from the west. Careful canopy management and clonal selection have resulted in small berries and loose clusters. Organic viticulture retains the fruit’s natural power and intensity, which Sarrion hones into elegance through French oak aging, which lends the wine finesse and polish.
