The Signature Wine of Chablis’ Most Important Address

A Raveneau Chablis is recognizable the instant you put your nose in the glass. The moment you taste it, you know you’re sampling the artistry of one of France’s single greatest small wineries.

Like Champagne, Chablis is a land of high yields. Chardonnay is forgiving that way. The key to the Raveneau family’s fame is the opposite: old vines and ruthless hard pruning, two factors that result in low yields and focused, concentrated wines with something to say. Over the last ten years, Raveneau has become a cult favorite with well-heeled collectors all over the world. Their Grand Cru wine, “Les Clos” currently trades for startling sums, more than many producers’ prices for Le Montrachet itself.

Maybe it’s the famous photograph of François Raveneau in overalls in Montée de Tonnerre (Thunder Mountain)—with glowering dark clouds gathering behind him, contrasting with the white limestone underfoot—or it’s the fact that this bottling makes up a third of the family’s scant 3,000 cases of production each year, but this is a signature, iconic bottling for the Raveneaus. We get just a handful of bottles each year, and if you’re reading this, you’ve got a shot at a few.
