Before Robert Mondavi launched his namesake winery in 1966, Napa Valley was a quiet farming community. His vision put Napa Valley squarely on the map of the world’s elite wine regions. And of all the vineyards he worked with — the To Kalon Vineyard held a special place in his heart. Reflecting on why he chose this jewel in the heart of Oakville when he set out on his own in 1966, Mondavi said, “It exuded an indefinable quality I could not describe, a feeling that was almost mystical,” with “ideal soils, sunlight,” and “to my eye, the vineyard was a treasure.” The 2014 marks the fourth time a To Kalon Vineyard-designated Reserve has ever been produced.

The first time we secured an allocation of Mondavi’s To Kalon Reserve came after an afternoon with the Oakville Winegrowers Association. We were among the privileged few seated at their invitation-only conference — courtesy of our friends at Robert Mondavi. After tasting the 50th Anniversary 2013 Cabernet, we beelined across the room and promptly requested an allotment. Our contact was tight-lipped. We pressed. “Sit tight. We’ll call you,” he calmly advised.
