The Winemaker with Too Many 100-Point Wines to Count

The Winemaker with Too Many 100-Point Wines to Count

Leviathan is the result of peerless winemaker Andy Erickson crafting this unique red wine, drawn from some of the best vineyards in Northern California. Erickson, whose resume includes Screaming Eagle, Staglin, Arietta, Harlan, and Spottswoode, assembles this proprietary red that the San Francisco Chronicle lauds as “access to trophy-level winemaking.” Robert Parker called the stellar 2013 vintage a “game-changer,” but not much changed for Erickson’s project in its 10th vintage: 2013 Leviathan remains one of the finest values in California red wine — as Vinous says “Andy Erickson’s Leviathan is gorgeous once again in 2013.” His name is gold, and any wine attached to it can fetch prices deep into three digits. But this Leviathan is unique; an affordable chance to experience pure Napa pedigree for $40.

2013 was a historic vintage in California, but its glory was spread widely, despite the tendency of Napa Cabernet to get all the ink. Robert Parker called the consistency of quality of all varieties planted across California’s North Coast possibly the best he’d seen in 37 years.

In other words, the 2013 was perfect for the 10th vintage of Leviathan, a wine that goes well beyond the grape and region that made Andy Erickson a household name. He and his wife Annie Favia — an accomplished viticulturist who has worked with Kongsgaard, Corison, Abreu, and Screaming Eagle — use their considerable clout to secure fruit of lofty quality and character for this small-lot passion project. In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon from prestigious Napa appellations, Leviathan uses Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc from top sites in Sonoma, Lake, and Amador counties. The result is a rich, juicy blend that represents the best of California at an extremely reasonable price.
